Sports is essential for holistic development of an individual and society. It instills a spirit of determination, ethics and perseverance which helps a person live a better life. The idea to promote sports in Gujarat gave shape to Khel Mahakumbh, the month long sporting event which involves participation of athletes from all villages, towns and cities of Gujarat across all age groups.
Under the guidance of the visionary Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Narendra Modi, the Sports Authority of Gujarat organises Khel Mahakumbh, the sports festival of Gujarat which brought together talent from the farthest corners of the state on one stage.
Objectives of Khel Mahakumbh
- To create a sports friendly environment.
- To discover talent and provide a platform for the athletes to display their talent.
- To create health awareness
The ceremonial relaying of the torch of Khel Mahakumbh will commence from Gandhinagar to Rajkot via two route travelling all across Gujarat spreading the awareness of the event and potential benefits of participation.
In 2013, the baton relay will be kicked off on 13 November, 2013 at 11:11 a.m. from Gandhinagar and concluded on November 22, 2013 after passing across all the cities of Gujarat at Rajkot.

Khel Mahakumbh 2012-13
Khel Mahakumbh 2012-13, which concluded on 13, 2013, witnessed participation of over 25 lakh athletes, including over 8 lakh women. About 92,000 specially abled athletes made Gujarat proud by participating in the event. Prizes worth Rs. 32 crores were distributed and 72 new records were created during the event.
