Khel Mahakumbh: India's Biggest Grassroots Sports Festival Explained
Khel Mahakumbh (literally "the great gathering of sports") is a state-run, multi-level sports festival that lets anyone, from a village school student to a 60-plus senior, compete in dozens of sports for free. It starts at the school, village or panchayat level and climbs through taluka, district and state rounds, with cash prizes, talent scouting and, in some states, government job reservation for medal winners.
The idea began in Gujarat in 2010 and has since been adopted by Uttarakhand, Delhi and other states under the same name. This page explains how it works, who can join, and what is happening in 2026.
Where it started: Gujarat
Gujarat launched Khel Mahakumbh in 2010 with 16 sports. By the 2023-24 edition it had grown to 39 sports, and a record 66 lakh (6.6 million) participants registered. That scale is why it is widely called the largest grassroots sports event in India.

The last completed edition, Khel Mahakumbh 3.0, ran from 5 December 2024 to 31 March 2025. Dates for the 2026-27 season are expected to follow the same pattern; check the official portal for the announcement.
Uttarakhand: Khel Mahakumbh 2026 is on right now
Uttarakhand runs its own Khel Mahakumbh, branded the Chief Minister's Championship Trophy. The 2026 edition, the state's 10th, was inaugurated on 1 September 2026 at Tanakpur, Champawat district, and has been widened to four tiers this year.

Announced incentives include Rs 11 crore in total prize money and a 4% reservation in state government jobs for state-level medal winners. The organising body is the Department of Youth Welfare and Provincial Guard Corps, Uttarakhand.
Delhi: Khelo Delhi - Delhi Khel Mahakumbh
Delhi held its first month-long Khel Mahakumbh starting 13 February 2026, targeting 30,000-plus athletes across seven disciplines including football, basketball, volleyball and kabaddi, with a stated focus on women's participation and safety.
National edition at Prayagraj
A separate seven-day Khel Mahakumbh was held at Sangam, Prayagraj, from 6 February 2025 alongside the Maha Kumbh Mela, with athletes from 28 states and 8 union territories competing in traditional and modern sports such as kabaddi, wrestling, kho-kho, archery and yoga.
Who can participate?
- Residents of the organising state (proof of residency may be asked for).
- All genders; every competition is open equally to men and women.
- Age brackets differ by state and sport, but the Gujarat model runs from Under-9 to 60+.
- Students register through their school or college; others register individually or as a team.
- Para-athletes have dedicated categories in Gujarat.
How to register (general steps)
- Open the official state portal (Gujarat: khelmahakumbh.gujarat.gov.in; Uttarakhand and Delhi announce their portals through the Sports/Youth Welfare departments).
- Choose Individual, Team or School/College registration.
- Enter name, gender, date of birth and guardian details, then pick your sport and age category.
- Save the reference ID (called a KMK ID in Gujarat) and password issued after submission; you need it to log in and view your schedule.
- Watch for your first-level fixture date and venue; winners advance automatically.
Why it matters
Khel Mahakumbh is the widest talent funnel Indian sport has. Because entry is free and the first round is held in the participant's own village or school, it reaches children who would never travel to a district trial. Several Gujarat participants have gone on to represent the state and India, and Uttarakhand has tied the event directly to jobs and prize money to keep athletes in the system.
